For Mac 10.6 and under instruct the customer to look for the apple icon on the top left of there desktop screen and click on it, then it will display an option titled 'about this mac' then go to 'more info' and then 'hardware' after that click on 'firewire' It then will display the full name of the device if its being read properly. For Mac 10.7 and 10.8 instruct the customer to go to there 'apps' and look for 'utilities' it will display an option titled 'system information' and then look for 'hardware' followed by 'firewire' and then you should be able to see the full name of the device if its working properly.
