Xls Files Won't Open On Excel 2016 For Mac

For several weeks I had been using Office 2016 for Mac with only the twice-per-week crashes when I'd work too fast and Excel couldn't manage to keep up. However, this week Excel won't open any.xls file. It had been opening them just fine previously, but now when I open any.xls file (either by double-clicking on the file in Finder or by using the Open File command in Excel), Excel crashes and has to restart. The only change I can think of that I have made recently is I installed the scheduled updates over the weekend. I am very disappointed in Office 2016, it stalls a lot and crashes often.
The first thing to do is install the recent updates. Make sure your Mac has a working internet connection, then: Update Mac OS X. Open the App store and click on the Updates button. Install the updates.
After, in any Office application go to the Help menu and choose Check for Updates to launch the AutoUpdate app. Let AutoUpdate install updates. I am an unpaid volunteer and do not work for Microsoft. Restart your Mac in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key down when you hear the startup chime. It will take a long time for your Mac to start up.
Once you get to the desktop, try again while your Mac has been booted in Safe Mode. Is the crash gone?
When done testing you can restart and let your Mac start up normally without holding the Shift key down. I am an unpaid volunteer and do not work for Microsoft. 'Independent Advisors' work for contractors hired by Microsoft.
