I bought some Seagate SATA 750 GB 32mb cache drives to use in a Pro Tools system for my son (system, recording, and sample drives.) It has a Gigabyte GA-8knxp (rev. 1) motherboard, P4 3-GHz. There are 2 SATA connectors controlled by the ICH5R and two more controlled by a Silicon Image 3112 chip. The BIOS is F12. There is an F13 but the list of 'fixes' says nothing about the issue I am having. A 750 GB drive plugged into either of the ICH5R ports is recognized just fine but when that same drive is plugged into either of the SIL3112 ports, during POST, the SIL3112 will identify the drive model and just hang there with a flashing cursor. It never proceeds to loading XP.

This is true regardless of which port (or both ports) are populated. The controller is SATA 150 (not 300) so I tried both jumper and no jumper to see if forcing 150 mode helped. I tried three different 750 Gb drives. I tried a 500 GB Seagate drive (unjumpered) and it was identified without a problem and the POST continued to XP bootup. From the research that I have done, it seems that there should not be any Hard Drive size limit with SATA since 48-bit LBA predated the SATA specs.

As far as I know, I have correctly set all of the available pertinent BIOS settings. Anyone have any ideas about what is going on and what I might do to fix this? TCM, Thanks for the link. I had been there before and did not think there was anything there for me.

So I went back and tried the driver and the utility with no luck. I updated the mobo BIOS to F13, no joy. I went to the SI website and downloaded an updated BIOS and flash utility but my onboard chip would have none of it. The BIOS as shown during POST still showed the same. So, I contacted Gigabyte and was told that their onboaed Sil3112 does have a 500 GB limit and there was no new BIOS for it. So it seems I am out of luck there.

I'll see about a PCI card to add to the system. At least I have the two ports from the ICH5R. Thanks for you help.
